In the tradition of the Boy Scouts it might be good to 'be prepared' and either have back up equipment or learn at least rudimentary navigation techniques. Man has become dependent on his technology in todays world.
The tenancy for students to be helpless with out a calculator is becoming more prevalent today and there are students who can't add or subtract much less multiply or divide without a calculator. This might seem unbelievable but I have seen this tutoring math to High school students over the last 10 years. We used slide rules back in the dark ages when I went to school. 50 years ago engineers used slide rules to do the math that we do today with calculators,but you will find that very few people remember how to use a slide-rule today.
We can easily forget how function in highly technical areas if we lose the electronics associated with it. You shouldn't worry about getting lost at sea if there is an equipment failure, because there are requirements that demand that navigators be trained in celestial navigation and hopefully yours will have practiced a little since finishing the course..
