Learning About Electronics Meters.
As you begin to design your own custom printed circuit boards, you’ll need to be able to measure various aspects of the current in your circuit. Handheld meters can measure everything from voltage to amps to ohms. They are invaluable tools that help you with everything from basic fault finding to very accurate measurements within a circuit or PCB.

Measurement Display: Digital or Analog
Meters come in two different resolutions or displays: analog or digital.
An analog display has a pointer that will glide over a graduated scale that has been marked with increments which relate to the measurements being taken. Highly accurate readings may be difficult to achieve depending on the increments of the scale. You must align your eye straight over the pointer to ensure the most exact measurement.
Because digital displays can show an exact value on their readout, they are the most accurate way to measure various areas of a circuit. Digital meters will probably suit your needs better than analog if you are given a choice between the two. Their readouts are easily understandable, they can be connected in reverse, and they usually will not affect the circuit being tested.
Know Your Meters
When constructing a PCB you will need to take measurements to ensure accuracy. Below are some examples of common meters:
Voltmeter
If you need to know the difference between 2 points in a circuit, you should use a voltmeter. Since analog meters draw more current, a digital voltmeter will show a much more accurate reading.
Ammeter
Ammeters will show how much current is in a circuit by displaying the measurement in amperes. Ammeters are also able to measure milli and microampres if the design needs those measurements.
Galvanometer
Galvanometers are specific ammeters that are used to measure current in small circuits, usually one milliampere or less.
Ohmmeter
Displayed in ohms, an ohmmeter will take a measurement of the electrical resistance in a given circuit.

Multimeter
