Electronics Hobbyists: What's In Your Toolbox?
The average electronics hobbyist has numerous tools in their arsenal. Don't worry, the majority of them aren't too expensive. There are far too many tools that you may need to make a definitive list of must haves, but we’ve put together this list of a few that you really can’t get started without.
Learn about PCB prototype fabrication.
Heat Sink
Attaching a standard crocodile clip to the spot you are soldering is definitely the least expensive choice for gathering excess heat when you're soldering.
Multi-meter
This tool is absolutely necessary to any electronics hobbyist. It measures amperes, voltage, and ohms in a given circuit.
Needlenose Pliers
With their pointy tips, these pliers are a great all-around tool for holding the small parts and pieces of electronics projects.
Resistor Lead Forming Tool
Yes, you could bend the leads with your bare hands, but the best way to bend leads is by utilizing a resistor lead forming tool. This tool makes sure that leads bend squarely and fit nicely into the pre-drilled holes of a PCB.
Tabletop Drill
When drilling holes in a PCB, you should have a set of tiny drill bits and a useable drill stand that allows holes to be drilled with precision.
Side Cutters
A small pair of side cutters is ideal for cutting and trimming component leads.
Set of Small Screwdrivers (both flat-head and Phillips)
Obviously, these are used mainly to drive screws. They are also useful when you have to scrape surplus flux or clean dirt from the PCB tracks.
Soldering Irons
There are soldering irons that work better than others for electronics. Usually, irons between 15w and 25w with a 2-3mm diameter tip will do just fine.
Explore the world of printed circuit boards.
Stand for Holding the Soldering Iron
You must have a safe place to store your soldering iron. Don’t just lay your iron down on your worktable, even if it has a safety stand attached to it. This tool requires a stable stand because they get so hot and present danger to anything they touch. A good stand should also have a sponge that can be dampened for cleaning the tip of your iron.
Soldering Wire
Choosing 22swg (standard wire gauge) will work just fine for the majority of electronics projects.
Tweezers
Electronics hobbyists use tweezers to insert leads and to grab tiny pieces that may have dropped into a place where pliers can't reach.
Wire Strippers
Cutting and stripping wires is something that is required in most electronics projects. Many wire strippers have different gauge measurements and side cutting capabilities, making them very useful tools.
