Electronic Cigarette Terminology Explored In Full
One of the coolest new gadgets - at least for smokers - this century is the electronic cigarette. Designed by a smoker devastated by the affect of lung cancer on his dying father, the device still delivers nicotine but without the tar and toxins of the normal cigarettes.
Crucially, maintain tobacco harm reduction experts, no combustion takes place. Combustion, not nicotine or tobacco, is what causes 99% of the harm of smoking.
But to buy an e-cigarette can be a minefield. With terms like vaping, analogs, atomisers and e-juice, you encounter an entire new vocabulary which seems designed to confuse!
Never fear! In this post we guide you through some of the most confusing terms.
Vaping: You don’t smoke an electronic cigarette - you vape it! It makes sense, as the device doesn’t create smoke (that’s the whole point) but water vapour.
Vaper: (Often misspelt as vapour!) A person who vapes.
Vaping: Both the continuous form of a verb (from the the verb to vape) and a gerund which refers to the hobby of using electronic cigarettes.
Atomiser (US: atomizer): A small device inside the electronic cigarette which heats up the nicotine-containing liquid.
PG: refers to the principal ingredient of eliquid, propylene glycol. You probably use propylene glycol as it is in medicines, cosmetics, foods, as a non-toxic anti-freeze in drinking water and is even used to sterilise air in air-conditioners. It also produces the ‘smoke’ effect, and is also used in stage smoke.
VG: refers to vegetable glycerine - the alternative to propylene glcyol. If you have an allergy to propylene glycol, use this instead!
Analog: used to refer to tobacco cigarettes by people who have made the switch to vaping!
E-Liquid - also referred to as e-juice: This refers to the liquid which contains the nicotine. This can be used to refill cartridges, although if you want to do this it is a good idea to order electronic cigarettes specifically designed for refilling.
Cartomiser (US: cartomizer): Original electronic cigarettes consisted of three parts: a cartridge, an atomiser and a battery. New advanced designs such as the HALO e-cigarette combine a disposable atomiser within the cartridge itself, meaning there is no more fiddling around with atomisers!
