Online Education Programs And Resultant Associate Of Science Degree Are A Powerful Combination

Animation is probably one of the biggest examples of teamwork in the artistic world. The production process resembles a sort of assembly line. The director/creator dreams up an idea, and then the cartoon goes through pre-production, production, post-production and then release.

An absolutely essential person in this is the designer. When a project is started, they work with the director to develop the initial appearance of the cartoon, from basic drawings to specifics about the character. In other words, it’s the designer’s drawings that start the whole process.

Those interested in animation design all have one thing in common. When they all children, they loved to draw. They were also fascinated with cartoons, whether the latest theatrical blockbuster or favorite Saturday morning TV shows. They also started imitating the drawings they saw.

What differentiates a designer from many of his/her fellow animators is they aren’t restricted to just animation. One of Disney’s greatest designers, Mary Blair, actually had a background in children’s illustration, and learned from her husband, who worked for Uncle Walt. Yet she never really did any animation herself. Still, these days it actually helps if a designer does take animation courses while getting a Bachelor’s of Fine arts at a brick-and-mortar or online college. With this knowledge they will better understand the process.

What differentiates an animation designer from others sorts in the craft though is one very important thing. Unlike other graphic designers, animation demands a simplicity of line so other animators can replicate with ease. If the characters get to complex, they become difficult to animate, and end up looking stiff on the screen.

There’s another important thing one can get from an animation school that helps one get employment, and this is helping a student put together a good demo reel (or disk) and portfolio. A designer usually has both. The printed portfolio displays his ability to draw while the disk shows how well they animate. A school gives the student access to a number of tools that often can’t be afforded.

From there, one’s first job at a studio will be as an assistant to an animator. The animation world is a small one, and those with talent quickly are pointed out. From there, the goal is to become a full animator. Then, if one’s work proves to be exceptional, some director will ask the animator to generate some original designs. If the director likes them, he’ll ask for more. The goal is to build a rep as a designer, then on to something like art director, storyboard or even director/creator.

There’s one very important thing all animation designers should know about their field, and that is when the project is over, so is the job. Still, animators make about $65,000 a year, depending on where and what industry they work for. Designers make more. Fortunately, thanks to the skills learned in online course programs and the incredible growth of the internet and video gaming, which all need animation, the number of animators - and therefore designers - is growing at a very steady pace. Those with Online information Technology Degrees may even find their talents take them in unexpected directions!
