An Explanation of Solid State Electronics
The majority of modern electronic products contain solid-state electronics. What exactly does that mean?
Solid-state electronics are circuits or devices built entirely from solid materials. The charge is confined entirely within these solid materials, which are engineered to switch and amplify it. These solid-state devices are commonly a component of printed circuit boards.

The current is composed of positively charged electron holes and negatively charged ions in the solid material. The interactions between the electrons and electron holes determine the form and function of solid-state devices.
Solid-State Semiconductors
Within solid-state devices, the solid semiconductor materials vary in conductivity. The most common semiconductor materials are silicon, germanium, and gallium arsenide.
The way the semiconductor materials behave can easily become manipulated by impurities within the material’s structure as they are introduced. The introduction of a magnetic or electric field can changed the conductivity, along with any exposure to heat or light. As a result, solid-state devices are easier to work with than the former vacuum tubes or thermionic devices.
Prior to the invention of solid-state electronics, vacuum tubes were used to control the charge within a circuit. The problem with vacuum tubes is that they created lots o f heat which resulted in them having to be replaced often. Aside from this, they were large and bulky. One of the reasons that TVs and radios were so large in the past is that they needed to provide adequate space for vacuum tubes and the circuitry associated with them. Miniaturization resulted once solid-state devices came into play. With today’s technology billions of microscopic transistors can put onto a single microprocessor chip. Without these solid advances in technology, the printed circuit would not be possible.

Since 1947, when the transistor was first invented, the amount of solid-state devices which are widely available for design and production have continued to rise. Some of the most common types of devices are listed below:
